Try It: Thai Boxing
I checked out a thai boxing facility for a 1-1 session prior to signing up for cardio class membership.
Things I wish I'd known prior to going:
1. How to wrap my hands
I was handed two, long pieces of material and placed in front of a placard like this:
(from Ironside)I wrapped, unwrapped, and rewrapped for twenty eight minutes. At one point, the gym's owner encouragingly explained why he would not assist me: "I could give you a fish. Or I could give you a fishing line and show you how to fish." Which doesn't take into account my proclivity to tangle the fishing line around my neck and strangle myself.
2. There are 7 types of punches.
That's a lot, dude.
3. Humans have the potential to stink like hell.
I was worked over for an hour (apparently my 28 minutes of wrap time didn't count towards my session). Punching, kicking, striking, and blocking all while shuffling my feet. I. Was. RANK.
4. Have dinner ready before your workout
I was so exhausted I could barely keep my hand from shaking to get out the bag of rice. Thank goodness the hubby stepped in to finish up or I would have passed out.
5. Thai Boxing is super addicting
I had to join the gym!! I'm skipping out on the fight training and sticking with the cardio classes but it should be awesome.
** UPDATE ** It's a few hours later, and my pinky toe nail just ripped off, I'm guessing from all the kicks. Mother. Effing. OUCH.

This sounds so cool! I want to sign up for taekwondo. I just signed my son up and now it's my turn!
EW!
I would love to do this, but I have a sensitive back injury that prevents this. I have to give up my dream of being a secret soccer mom ninja--I tells you, sometimes the cards you're dealt just aren't FAIR!
*goes off to watch some Jackie Chan movies*
I was so sore from this workout which didn't help when I was sitting in line for five hours to see Twilight/New Moon double feature! AGH!
Christina - totall ydo it! Lemme know how it goes. Maybe we can convince Angela to try a little somethin'
JD - oh yeah, def ew.
Everybody's Kung Fu fighting, feet totally stinky...
Body sweat flowing, got to get going...
There's little Obnoxious, beating on Big Botoxious...
SIGH, I twied.
I've always wanted to try that!
Awesome. Gotta watch out for my pinky toe, seems like...
Is Thai Boxing the same as muay thai? If so, you REALLY have to hang out with Lala and me sometime soon. She does muay thai (or used to, before it started hurting her feet and she got more into music than boxing) but she loves it. And when I told her you wanted to see ong bak 2 she was soooo jealous I knew someone who wanted to see it and she didn't. (But you'd already seen it by the time I told her.)
Totally impressed that you did it!
I'm impressed that you did that too. There's something about wrapping your hands that just makes this look SO cool!
I loved doing tae kwon do and judo. I was awful at just about everything but kicking, but loved the work-out!
Ah Rachael, so many reasons for me and Lala to hang out! I am really, really lame at this. (I mean, thanks for being impressed Daisy and Mary but really so so lame.) I confirmed I was lame when I fought my brother who has trained his whole life and pretty much had me in a wrist break in less than ten seconds. But I gotta keep going to get better, right? :)
