Be It: The Pathetic Blonde Sidekick
Do Blondes Have More Fun?
Not on the CW Network.
Both Fall 2009 debuts of Melrose Place and The Vampire Diaries feature Blondes as sloppy seconds to gorgeous Brunettes who get the guy as their light-haired sisters sit back in unrequited angst.
These Blondes are played gorgeous actresses (Katie Cassidy and Candice Accola respectively) and are written as sassy, fun, mostly likeable characters - so what gives?
In fact, The Vampire Diaries novels written by LJ Smith feature a blonde heroine who was cast as brunette in the TV Series, punctuating the trend even more.
Does the CW believe casting Blondes in second chair really defies stereotype?

i noticed the same trend in the Taylor Swift "I belong to you" video. The dorky girl is blond whereas teh popular cheerleader is brunette.
is the media over the blonde bombshell already? maybe cameron diaz ruined it (again) for them. i mean-- MY SISTER'S KEEPER.
Apparently, per my womans studies class in college, it started in the 70's with movies like Fatal Attraction. Blonds are usually portrayed as stupid or psycho, brunettes as smart and red heads as always on the edge of screaming. Why are these the stereotypes? I would take a look at the % of brunettes, blonds and red heads out there and see who has more power.
All the same, this characterization of blonds being easy, stupid or psycho has been going on for generations in almost ALL movies. Find me a movie or show with a smart, fun blond as the heroine. Please. I beg of you.

That is very interesting...but where do the redheads fall?
