Ooh, I'm first!
Okay: favorite Asian actor. Takakura Ken, hands down (swoon). My kids say Ikuta Toma, Akanishi Jin, Kee Jun Ki, Oguri Shun, Horikita Maki, Miura Haruma, Kim Hyung Joon -- and they'd have gone on, but I had to stop them because I'm pretty sure you said ONE, right?
My favorite Asian book would have to be a collection of short stories by Mukoda Kuniko.
Uh oh...I've just reread your post and see that you're only supposed to put down a book or an actor... Do I get extra chances if I leave it the way it is? (Just kidding...sort of)
My favorite Asian fiction? How about my very own MG Korean historical? Oh, yeah, its not quite finished. And then I've got to get it published. :)
Okay, so seriously, I'd have to say Single Shard but then , 1000 Paper Cranes was fab and I'm reading Year of Impossible Goodbyes (long overdue to read it) and its good too.
As you can see, I read any Asian children's books I can get my hands on, but I'm bias to Korean stories!
Gong Li's my favorite Asian actress. Love all her movies, but my fav was probably The Emperor and the Assassin. I've written a YA manuscript that takes place in South Korea, but it's languishing on my hard drive.
Based on what I've heard, I'm guessing Silver Phoenix will become an instant classic in this category. I want a copy!
Whoa! I haven't heard of half of these people/books. I love recommendations. I consider Jhumpa the cream of the crop for writers. But actors? I can't pick a favorite! There's the guilty pleasure hong kong action stars...gong li as mentioned...that jackie chan crowd I grew up watching as a kid..crap, i can't answer my own question!
thanks so much for doing this!
i'd have to say i love gong li myself. she was tremendous in raise the red lantern. i also loved "in the mood for love" with maggie cheung (?). those qi paos were to DIE FOR!
and i very much enjoyed the secrets of jin-shei by alma alexander!
of course, i'm just playing for fun. good luck everyone!
Asian Fiction and TV. Hmmm. I have I mentioned that I am a mommy? Sophia's latest TV obsession is Nickelodeon's Ni-hao, Kai-lan.
I <3 Kai-lan and her friends. Especially Ho-ho. There is an episode about dragon races that is my favorite. I actually make Sophia watch it! ;-)
Kal Penn is my favorite asian american actor. Favorite asian-- TAKESHI KANESHIRO!
Melanie-- great thinking, i love Kai-lan too.
When I first read this post I thought I had to come up with Asian females, but saw I was mistaken. Here goes since totally can't pick one of anything
1) Maggie Cheung- LOVE her and want to be her. OR Michelle Yeoh- love her and want to be her too. Or at least their #$@-kicking counterparts in movies!
2) Tony Leung- I don't even know how to begin to express my love for him. Oh and Chow Yun Fat too. Oh and Andy Lau. This is my trifecta.
3) Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies- perfection. Oh and Vikram Seth- A Suitable Boy.
4) Rain- ok, specifically, his dance off with Stephen Colbert.
5) Ninja Assassin- again ok, this movie hasn't even come out yet, but it's called Ninja Assassin and stars Rain and some other Korean actor guys so no question it's going to be awesome.
6)The guy who plays Cho on the Mentalist- don't even know his real name, but 'there's no business like Cho business' hooked me.
7) Mu-lan- hey, she is animated, but at least she got to fight and do a bunch of non-girly/non-Disney things.
8) Grace Park as Boomer/Sharon/Athena, etc-actually maybe I only want to be her since she ended up with Helo.
9) Haruki Murukami- hmm.... the ones I've read are downers, but I couldn't stop reading so that says somethinig.
10) Ha Jin- Waiting- there was something about his style...
I'm sure there is more, but that's all for now!
Ok, I'm going to be horrible and jump slightly on what you said, Martha. I love Jackie Chan! He seems like such a sweet guy and I have to admit a certain addiction to his cartoon series as well as his movies, LOL.
in college i toootally had a crush on Jet Li. Romeo must die. I even downloaded the soundtrack from napster. Remember napster? So back in the day!
Jet hasn't done much to my liking since.
Ok you know I don't need a copy so don't enter me in, but I had to comment because I just saw Wolverine and did you see the beautiful Asian actor playing Zero? drool drool drool. He's happa - name Daniel Henny. Saw him awhile back in a Korean series. He looks better here. drool drool drool...
My favorite asian actor/tv star and singer is Ayumi Hamasaki! She did a few movies and had her own tv show Ayu Ready? but now she dedicates her time to the music.
hmm...I think my favorite actress would have to be Gong Li. Im pretty sure she was an actress that stared in Memoirs of a Geisha which i loved. I also loved the book! I also really love Jackie Chan!
Id love to win Silver Phoenix! I bet its great!
oh and is this open to Canada because if it isnt then don't enter me.

OMG I need to take a week off work and catch up on all these awesome actors and movies!!
Ello - just saw Wolverine and was sorely disappointed by Agent Zero's constant clothedness.
As e mentioned above, Cho (Tim Kang) from The Mentalist is awesome. He's all dour and laconic and HILARIOUS. There was one episode where he pretends to be a caddish ladykiller and he pretty much nailed i.
I am trying to win this book all over town! Although I did just get a Barnes & Noble card for my birthday...
Ooooooo, this is a good book!
Enter, people, enter!
:D
As a young Asian-American male growing up in the 80's and 90's, the only role model on TV was Russell Wong - the Vanishing Son himself. Like all Asian males in mainstream media, he never got the girl but still kicked some ass! OK, I'll give you Dustin Nguyen from 21 Jump Street, but Russell was the lead! What a trailblazer........
A close second would be John Cho for his kick-assitude in Star Trek!
How 'bout Asian American authors? Maxine Hong Kingston, an Amy Tan type who will kick your ass!
This is seriously the most awesome list of Asian-ness ever!!! Thanks everyone for playing. Check the blog to see who won!
