Need It: Security Blanket
Being on vacation makes you miss the stuff you have at home, the stuff you need by your side or you freak out. Your security blanket. Here's mine:
BOOKS!!!!
I needs 'em. Lots of them. This is the unread pile by my bedside. And this isn't even the pile when it's out of control.
There are lots of subpiles within the pile including:
A set of YA ghost stories. My current manuscript is a ghost story so I've sworn them off until I'm further along in submission to avoid plot-envy. This collection keeps growing. I'm excited about getting to read them!

Nonfiction geeky math stuff. I like math. And geeky stuff. This is also where I pile my Brian Greenes and my Malcolm Gladwells.
You ever buy a book, find out its part of a series, buy the series, then find out there's one more? That's what's going on with me and the Nightwatch Series. One to go. Then I'll take a long weekend and bust through these babies.
Good ol' fashioned women's fiction. I also have a pile of Nick Hornsby which I consider wf.

Stuff I read over and over and over again. Basically Twilight and cookbooks. These are the only re-reads vs un-reads in the pile.
While on vacation, I brought three books with me.
- The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak (read it, loved it, review pending)
- What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell (read it, loved it, review pending)
- Little Brother by Cory Doctorow (commandeered by husband for random needs)
Once I read the first two, my security blanket was thinning. So I did what any sensible booklover would do. I ran out and bought:
- Evermore by Alyson Noel (finished it)
- The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan (reading it)
- If I Stay by Gayle Forman (next on my list)
Luckily, I made it home before another desperate dash to the bookstore. But clearly I have an emotional (yet healthy?) attachment to the written word.

Wow, I do like photos of people's to-read pile. I posted mine (http://www.benjaminsolah.com/blog/?p=552) at the start of the year.
But I could never read as fast as you! Nice work!
And nice blog.
I love it. The written word is an awesome security blanket because it's so available! I don't know how I feel that my to-read list is the same as your discarded list.
I always have the hardest time deciding what books to pack on vaca cause I know I shouldn't make my bag too heavy. And your pile is as big as mine, except I have a whole mix of library books in the mix too!
I used to be a fast reader, then I started writing a lot. Now I'm a turtle reader; I keep doing double takes at certain passages and having to reread them, or going over them to see why I think they don't work. But I definitely have to have a big pile of books near me or I start to feel nervous -- and my husband is much worse.
Now I'm going to have to take another shot at The Book Thief. I don't know why I can't get into it, honestly...
i have only one comment about ur bedside books: TUBAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Your to be read pile is awesome. I am suitably envious. I had a stack of a measly five or so on my bedside table. Practically NOTHING in the TBR universe. Hubby decided to clean. Asked him where they went. He said: Bookshelf. Where books belong. I said: Bookshelf books are for books I've ALREADY read. Argument ensued. Compromise: I get to keep only two books on my TBR pile. It feels so very, very wrong.
I guess I should bite the bullet and buy a Sony reader or something. But I will never do that. I cherish each individual book. I love looking at covers. I love TBR piles. Sigh. Maybe if I had my own room ...

P.S. I had the same problem with The Book Thief. Got 3/4 of the way through and stopped and never picked it up again. I will finish but it didn't hold me as much as I'd hoped...
Everyone, I promise The Book Thief is worth it!! But agree that it was a disciplined read.
Ello - I have a love/hate relationship with libraries. I'll have to blog about it...as soon as I figure out whether theft from libraries is a felony.
JD - Tuba has 24 hour expiration, right?
ugh... clutter...you know i can't stand it. What you need is a built-in library, possibly near a backyard, my friend!
and someone learned how to post photos on her blog!
I've not had such a good laugh in months. You! Unforgettable? Your mother and brother obviously have Alzhermers (sic)! Dad
I don't understand people who say they never have time to ready. I never sit down in a chair without a book in my hand. Chelly
